Support for Asylum Seekers

IF YOU ARE AN ASYLUM SEEKER

Canada offers refugee protection to some people in Canada who fear persecution or who would be in danger if they had to leave. Some risks they may face include:

  • Torture

  • Risk to their life

  • The threat of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment

If you feel you could face one of these risks if you go back to your home country or the country where reside, you may be able to seek protection in Canada as a refugee.

Once you are in Canada, you can seek asylum at the port of entry (airport) or later online. In Canada, asylum is also known as a refugee claim.

If circumstances allow you, it will be good to learn more about the whole process before you move to Canada. Immigration and refugee board of Canada's website is the best source of all the relevant information you have to know.

Seeking asylum is legal in Canada. If you need more information about what you have to do, do not hesitate to disclose your concerns to our settlement workers at the airport.
